Transactions

Adding a transaction

  • All Transactions → Add opens a form where you pick the account.
  • On an account page, Add Transaction adds a row at the top of the list (on a phone it opens as a sheet).

The payee field suggests people and businesses you've used before. If a payee has a default category, it's filled in for you, and your rules run as soon as you save.

Importing a CSV file

Most banks let you download your transactions as a CSV file. Open the account, choose Import CSV, pick the file, and tell FlyBudget what each column holds: Date, Payee, Amount (or separate Inflow and Outflow columns), Notes, or Skip. The preview marks rows you already have as duplicates, so you can import overlapping date ranges safely.

Splits

One purchase can cover several categories, like a supermarket trip that's part groceries and part household. Open the transaction and split it into parts; the parts always add up to the total.

Transfers

Moving money between two of your accounts (paying a credit card from checking, for example) is a transfer, not spending. Transfers are linked: change the amount or date on one side and the other follows; delete one side and the other becomes a normal transaction.

Working offline

On a self-hosted server, if the connection drops, transactions you add are kept on your device and sent in order when it comes back. Edits and deletes wait for the connection, so you never overwrite a change made on another device.

See the Transactions tour for filters, the detail panel and more.
