When the connection drops

FlyBudget on a self-hosted server keeps working when your phone or laptop loses its connection, or the server restarts. (The desktop app doesn't need any of this: its server runs inside the app.)

While it's reconnecting​

A banner at the top says FlyBudget can't reach the server, that saving is paused, and when it'll try again: after 2 seconds, then 4, 8, 16, and every 30 seconds after that. Retry now tries straight away, and FlyBudget also tries as soon as your device is back online or you return to the tab. Everything already on screen stays there, and the moment the server answers, the banner goes away and the page refreshes.

The status line at the bottom of the sidebar turns amber while FlyBudget is reconnecting.

Adding transactions offline​

New transactions and transfers you add while offline are kept on your device and sent, in order, when the connection comes back. They're listed as Saved on this device at the top of the transactions, marked "Sent when FlyBudget reconnects": until then they aren't in your balances or the budget. Each one is sent exactly once, even if you have FlyBudget open in several tabs.

If the server refuses one when it arrives (say its account was deleted meanwhile), it stays in the list with the reason, so you can Try again or Discard it.

Edits, deletes and budget changes wait for the connection instead: saving them later could overwrite a change someone made on another device in the meantime. Their save buttons say that saving is paused.

Opening FlyBudget while the server is down​

FlyBudget keeps a copy of your budget on each device you use (in the browser's storage), so it can open with your data even when the server can't be reached. The banner says how old that copy is.

  • The copy is updated a moment after new data loads, only while you're signed in.
  • It holds budget data only: never your password, bank connections, devices or server details.
  • It's deleted when you sign out, when your session ends, and if it's more than 30 days old.
  • To turn it off on a device, untick Keep a copy of my budget on this device in Settings → Server. That deletes the copy.

On a server with HTTPS (or on localhost), the browser also keeps the app itself, so FlyBudget opens with no connection at all. Over plain HTTP on your home network, it opens offline only in a tab that was already open.
